Could Anybody Love Me?

By Scarlett Stough

A song's lyric lamented "Searching for Love in All the Wrong Places." That song could be the theme song for today even though written decades ago. A person who feels unloved and unlovable will go looking for love in all the wrong places. The void can be filled with anger and hostility towards others. The void can be filled by joining a group, religious or otherwise. The void can be filled by promiscuous behavior. The void can be filled with work or by intentional solitude to try to avoid hurt. But, those attempts don't meet the very real need everyone has to be loved and to love. They will all disappoint.

There is only one faithful love. There is only one faithful source of love. The love one person can have for another is a mere shadow of the real thing. Whether a person believes in God or not, any love experienced has its source in God.

God loves not because a person has earned his admiration, but because love is who he is. Love is his motivation for creation. Love is why you and I exist at all. The chain of love was broken when Eve and Adam chose to believe a lie instead of God's loving instruction. God didn't give up on us. He didn't give up on Adam and Eve. He promised them a way back. He still loves us. Jesus is the way back.

Jesus answered [Thomas], "I am the way and the truth and the life."
John 14:6

He still calls us to love him back and to love one another. His love is all for our benefit; his love never fails.

If you feel unloved and unlovable, there is One who will love you. He already does, but you will not be able to receive it until you come to him through Jesus the Christ. Seek him and he will come to you, filling you with his Spirit, pouring his love into your life, so you can know how to love and be loved.
