There is nothing like 90 to 100 degree temperatures to create a desire to drink a nice tall glass of ice cold water to quench thirst. Yet, sometimes we ignore our thirst or choose to drink something less effective and healthful to quench that thirst.
Spiritual thirst can only be satisfied by “living water,” which Jesus, the Son of God, came to provide. When Jesus encountered a spiritually thirsty woman at a well, he told her:
“If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” ….”but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
John 4:10, 14
Later on, Jesus spoke to a crowd:
“If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.” By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.
John 7:37-39
Peter, after the Holy Spirit was given to those 120 who were waiting (Acts 2:4), told the crowd who asked him what they should do, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children, and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call (Acts 2:38-39.)”
This instruction is for every generation to come, as well as the generation Peter answered. We are part of those “all who are far off.” To receive this living water, the Holy Spirit, we also must repent, turn from a sinful way of life, and be immersed (baptized).
“I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star.” The Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let him who hears say, “Come!” Whoever is thirsty, let him come; and whoever wishes, let him take the free gift of the water of life.
Revelation 22:16-17
Are you thirsty?
