When we commit ourselves to a life lived in Christ and receive the Holy Spirit, we have committed ourselves to a life which is lived for God. Jesus never promised a life free of trouble or suffering.
Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body, arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because he who has suffered in his body is done with sin. As a result, he does not live the rest of his earthly life for evil human desires, but rather for the will of God.1 Peter 4:1-2
He did promise when we live a life dedicated to doing good God's way, it would be worth the cost. There is a cost to following Jesus; there is also a cost for not. Jesus told his disciples:
If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it. What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit his very self?Luke 9:23-25
The apostle Peter exhorts Christians:
Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed. If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rest on you. If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler…So then, those who suffer according to God's will should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good.1 Peter 4:12-15, 19
The writer of the book of Hebrews reminds us of the faithful perseverance of the people of God in Chapter Eleven. He follows this reminder with this exhortation:
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.Hebrews 12:1-3
