Jesus warned a crowd who had gathered to hear him teach to "Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions (Luke 12:15)."

The question we need to ask ourselves, then, is, "Of what does my life consist?"

I think most of us have learned through the years that more, bigger and better material things do not give us lasting satisfaction. The pleasure, or even thrill, of having something new is a temporary emotional high. We have learned to agree with Jesus that life, real life, is not defined by how much we have accumulated. Yet, we still seem to need to be reminded from time to time of the truth stated by Paul, "godliness with contentment is great gain (1 Timothy 6:6).'

Jesus said, "I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly (John 10:10b KJV)."

God commanded the nation of Israel through Moses, "Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the LORD your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the LORD is your life, and he will give you many years in the land he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob (Deuteronomy 30:19-20)."

Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him (John 14:6-7)."

Jesus brought the message offering life to those who would believe and follow him, first to Israel, and then to the rest of the world through his disciples. Just as Israel was told "the LORD is your life" so are we told Jesus is our life. The promise to Israel was "many years in the land"; the promise to all who would believe and follow Jesus is eternal life (John 3:1-21) beginning with renewed life now (Romans 6:1-4.)
