Life and Peace

Who among us wouldn't love to enjoy "life and peace?" There is a way, but that way involves setting aside our natural focus on our own selfish interests which is impossible naturally. We have to have help beyond ourselves to achieve that level of focus.

For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
Romans 8:7-8 ESV

This same chapter in Romans goes on to tell us, "You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you….And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you (Romans 8:9-11 ESV.)"

The life the Spirit gives is meant to be lived now. Yes, there is a promised resurrection from the dead, but life and peace is a promise just as much for the way we live our mortal lives here and now. We have a choice; we can "live according to the flesh" or we can "live according to the Spirit" in this world, in our present life. If we desire the life and peace Jesus promised to those who belong to him, we will choose to live according to the Spirit.
