Are we no longer a nation under God? The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals recently ruled that the Pledge of Allegiance was unconstitutional because of the phrase “under God.” The decision did not suprise me. Some how along the line it was forgotten that many of our forefathers came here for freedom of religion, not freedom from religion. The freedom of religion gives those who did not have a belief in God the right not to believe. They are not required to say “under God” if they do not want to. So why are they so adamant about removing God from this nation? We could pass it off saying that Satan is influencing them to do so. Which no doubt he has a hand in this. But what leads them to this influence? Should they not see such a “great cloud of witnesses” to realize that even though they do not believe, living around Christians has great advantages? How do they see Christianity? As a group of people that feel they are above the law as they try to cover up alleged crimes by their ministry? Churches that condemn each other for their beliefs that may be slightly different even though both claim to be Christian. Church organizations that seem to care more about your money than you? These are some of the complaints I have heard about Christianity. But these complaints are about the “organization of religion.” That is why each of our personal witnesses are so important. Jesus revealed an important principle which, I believe, is one of the principles this nation was founded on, that all of mankind are created equal. He demonstrated that when he talked to the Samaritan woman. “There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male or female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” Gal 3:28 When Christianity first got started, they were called “the Way.” The way they lived their lives, how they treated each other and those outside their group, was what drew people to Christianity. The principle of treating everyone as an equal was unique. There was an outgoing concern for others, no matter what their status was in the society around them. The fruit of the Spirit was their everyday witness to the world. As we celebrate this Independence Day, let us be reminded of the Christian principles this nation was founded on. Let it be a reminder of how everyday we need to be living the Way as a witness to this nation. Let us be a nation under God.
