What a timely reminder
this month's issue has brought in light of the disaster of hurricane Katrina.
"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." Matthew 11:28-30It serves to remind us how temporary this life and the things around us are. I am not sure how many of you reading this have family and friends directly affected by this disaster. I can imagine your most important concern is that they are alive. The stress I referred to in my lead-in for this month's issue pales in comparison to those directly affected by Katrina. Although all of us are affected by this, we need to reach out to those that are so much more in need. "Then the King will say to those on his right, `Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.'There are many good charities already in place to help people in such disasters that can use our financial help. (www.give.org is a good place to find a reliable charity.) There will be, not only the immediate need, but a long term need. I encourage you to donate to the charity of your choice. Undoubtedly, many of you already have. "Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work." II Corinthians 9:7-8Some of you may be unable to give financially. But there are some things that money can't buy. There will be people in need of spiritual healing. "He heals the brokenheartedWe all can pray for the spiritual healing and strength of the people who have been so devastated by this disaster. Our prayers are the most important thing of all to give because there are some things only God can provide. We only need to ask. |
