Notes from Nancy

In this past month, I have had to stand up for my beliefs in a way that jeopardizes my job. Since I am not married, it is my sole source of income.

I asked for prayers from my friends not only for God's will in this trial, but for my attitude. The next day, I was reading scriptures that contained the word "faith" in the New Testament. What came into my mind was not from the New Testament, but the story of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, (Daniel 3:1-30), and a peacefulness came upon me.

What wonderful examples of attitudes in faith they set for us.

"Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego replied to the king, "O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to save us from it, and he will rescue us from your hand, O king.  But even if he does not, we want you to know, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up." Daniel 3:16-18
That was the attitude I was missing. I know God has the power and the will to get me through this trial, what I was missing was the true expression of that, "But even if" God chooses for me to lose my job, that is okay.

This past week I started reading "Spiritual Maturity" by J. Oswald Sanders. In his chapter, "The Satisfying Compensations of God," he lists three resources of faith.

1. Faith in the ability of God.
2. Confidence in the willingness of God.
3. Acceptance of the Sovereignty of God
That acceptance of the sovereignty of God is the "But even if". It is the acceptance of what God will decide to do or not do for us in a trial. It is the walking by faith, not by sight. It is that calm assurance that whatever happens, all things work for the spiritual good of those who love God. It is the "Peace, be still".

Please enjoy this month's issue on faith and may God bless you with "But even if".
