Notes from Nancy |
I remember when
God first truly started opening His Word to me. It was wonderful. I was
sent teachers that I learned much from. As Philip was sent to teach the
Ethiopian eunuch, He often sends teachers to us.
"Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, "Go south to the road-- the desert road-- that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza." So he started out, and on his way he met an Ethiopian eunuch, an important official in charge of all the treasury of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians. This man had gone to Jerusalem to worship and on his way home was sitting in his chariot reading the book of Isaiah the prophet. The Spirit told Philip, "Go to that chariot and stay near it." Then Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. "Do you understand what you are reading?" Philip asked. "How can I," he said, "unless someone explains it to me?" So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.Surely there are those that have a gift for teaching. And they are faithful to God. But, I also learned that the responsibility is not all that of the teacher. Let us look at another scripture. "Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true. " Acts 17:11Here was Paul, a faithful apostle. Did the Bereans take every word he said as the "gospel truth." No! They searched the Scriptures to see if what if he said was true. Does God only teach through ordained ministers? In history we can learn how some clergy tried to prevent the layman from having a copy of the scriptures. Some believed that only those who were ordained could understand. They may have even justified it by I Corinthians 12:28 "And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, also those having gifts of healing, those able to help others, those with gifts of administration, and those speaking in different kinds of tongues. "It can get confusing. How are we suppose to know a true teacher from one that is trying to lead us way off from the truth? There is a whole book in the New Testament to give us confidence that we can tell a false teacher from a true one. God shows through I John that we can know a false teacher. In I John, the word abide is used 20 times, love is used 44 times and know is used 37 times. One of the lessons I learn from this book is when we abide with Christ, we love others and we can know others abide in Him by their love. Read I John and learn that we can discern those who are trying to lead us astray. (I John 2:26) And remember who, through the Spirit, our true Teacher is. "As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit--just as it has taught you, remain in him." I John 2:27 |
