By This We Know

By Scarlett Stough

How can we know for sure we really do know God? The apostle John said we could know. And he told us how we could know.

And by this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments. The one who says "I have come to know Him," and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him; but whoever keeps His word, in him the love of God has truly been perfected. By this we know that we are in Him: the one who says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked.

1 John 2:3-6 NASB

To know God involves both trust and obedience. Even though we receive forgiveness and eternal life by faith, being saved from death involves living a life leading to life. There is a way that leads to death.

Enter by the narrow gate; for the gate is wide, and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and many are those who enter by it. For the gate is small, and the way is narrow that leads to life, and few are those who find it.

Matthew 7:13-14 NASB

Jesus sets us on a way that leads to life.

Jesus said to him [Thomas], "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through me."

John 14:6 NASB

The metaphor of "walking as Jesus walked" involves the same kind of obedience to the Father that Jesus lived here on earth. Grace gives us the opportunity to get up when we fall away from obedience so we can keep on walking that same way toward life.

For a righteous man falls seven times, and rises again, but the wicked stumble in time of calamity.

Proverbs 24:16 NASB

Sin, missing the mark of obedience we aim for each day, does not mean we don’t know God; it just means we are still learning to walk as Jesus walked. Grace is his hand lifting us up to keep on trying just like a toddler learning to walk. But we can’t use our sinful nature and God’s grace as an excuse to keep on doing what comes naturally (Romans 6:1; 1 Peter 2:16).

Jesus shows us the way; let's walk in his footsteps so we can know God.
