The dramatic true story of a former Planned Parenthood leader’s eye-opening journey across the life line

I almost quit reading this book at the first chapter. The story began at the catalyst for Abby’s conversion which describes her first observation of the abortion of a thirteen week fetus. It is not for the faint of heart, which I definitely am.

My husband began reading the book and commenting favorably on it. So I set off again where I left off and this time I did finish reading it. The purpose of the book is to show the abortion controversy from both sides of the issue. Abby Johnson began on the pro-choice side, and was compelled by conscience and truth to realize a human embryo is a person. She reveals the perspective she had, concern for the women who needed education and services. She talks about the recruiting message which gave her incentive to join a cause she felt worthwhile while she was in college.

She talks about what her job entailed, the conflict between pro-life and pro-choice supporters, and her gradual awakening to word crafting that slanted and distorted truth.

The lesson I believe to be gained in reading this book is in its illustration of the effectiveness of prayer, kindness, and truth. Belligerence and violence do not change minds and hearts. Truth and kindness do.

I think church leaders would find Abby’s experience with churches to be motivating to make some corrections in how people are treated. It was the courtesy and kindness, along with the truth, from the Coalition for Life staff which gave Abby a place to resolve her guilt and remaining doubts about the pro-life, pro-choice controversy.

People cannot be bullied into accepting truth. The Bible instructs us to "speak the truth in love." We are not supposed to sugar coat the truth, but neither is it effective to try to cram it down the unwilling throats of the opposition. Understanding has to come before reconciliation. After all, as followers of Christ we have been given the ministry of reconciliation.
