Ties That Bind

A Cobbled Court Quilts Novel

by Marie Bostwick

Ties That Bind is the fifth book in the Cobbled Court series by Christian author Marie Bostwick, but it is the first one of hers I have read. Some Christians feel " fiction" and "Christian" are contradictory terms, but they don’t have to be. Fiction can carry truth emotionally, convicting us in a way non-fiction often fails to do.

Relationships in this story are tested to the breaking point by tragedy, a custody battle, and disagreements over how to use a bequest to the local church the main characters attend . People have to deal with prejudices, misunderstandings due to gossip, and find their way back to reconciliation. There is a budding romance which could have been left out and the story would still have been carried by the other story lines.

The author, through her characters, shows how attempts to manipulate others can backfire. Deceit can be carried by body language as well as in lying words. She shows a church facing a crisis which, through communication and willingness to listen to reason, the members are able to come to decisions that strengthen the "ties that bind" them together in Christian love and service.

If you read for entertainment anyway, Christian novels can provide a pleasant way to relax without filling one’s mind with a world view different from your own. The church in this novel may not be of your denomination, but any Christian can identify with the problems being faced.
