The Freedom of Self-forgetfulness, The Path to True Christian Joy

by Timothy Keller

The Freedom of Self-forgetfulness is only 47 pages in a pocket-sized book; but its simple message based on 1 Corinthians 3:21-4:7 has the potential of changing the life of a person willing to listen to it and to apply it.

Timothy Keller explains how neither high nor low self-esteem can bring about a changed heart. He explains genuine humility and its source. His insights enrich our understanding of the foundation for living a Christ-filled life.

I recognized my own life experience in it, realizing once more how far short of God's glory I fall. I also realized the ways God had been patiently working in my life to bring me further along than when I started.

Besides reading the sermon in this little book, I would recommend reading 1 Corinthians 3:21-4:7 in as many versions as possible as well as the surrounding text of the letter. Timothy Keller's insights shine a bright light on God's word to us through Paul so we can better understand how to be obedient to the gospel of Christ without either boasting or self-hatred.
