Simple Faith,
Discovering What Really Matters

Simple Faith by Charles R. Swindoll, book cover.

Charles R. Swindoll took the title for his book Simple Faith from Colossians 2:6 in the Phillips translation.

Just as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so go on living in him--in simple faith.
His stated purpose for writing Simple Faith is: “…to help those who were once held captive know how to live the life Christ taught and modeled….Christ, who came to set captives free, still offers a life worth living to those who have been liberated. It is a life that may not always be easy or comfortable, but one thing is certain: It is not all that complicated.”

Simple Faith is the clearest exposition of Matthew Chapters 5, 6, and 7 I have ever read or heard. The author challenges the reader to examine him or herself by these words of Jesus. They are often read, but seldom put into practice. He wrote, “In a busy, angry, complicated world like ours, I know of no greater need than an authentic display of simple faith. Surrounded by a jumble of activities being carried out by exhausted, joyless people--many of them claiming to be Christians--the presence of a life that demonstrates love and extends grace, a life that represents compassion, humility, and mercy, is long overdue.”

I encourage everyone to buy, beg, or borrow a copy of this book; read it thoughtfully and prayerfully; and as James, the brother of Jesus, wrote:

But be ye doers of the word and not just hearers only. (James 1:22 KJV)
Without simple faith in Jesus as the Son of God, our Lord and Savior, our deeds are an exercise on a hamster’s wheel. But with simple faith, God will infuse our doings with power and the results will be as J. B. Phillips so eloquently paraphrases Colossians 2:7:
Grow out of him as a plant grows out of the soil it is planted in, becoming more and more sure of the faith as you were taught it, and your lives will overflow with joy and thankfulness.
