Book cover: Slaying the Giants in Your Life

Slaying The Giants In Your Life begins and follows through in language that captures your interest and keeps it throughout its twelve chapters. “Listen…Can you hear them coming? You can run, but you cannot hide. You might as well come out and fight.” The author David Jeremiah covers these topics: fear, discouragement, loneliness, worry, guilt, temptation, anger, resentment, doubts, procrastination, failure, and jealousy.

He gives examples out of his experiences as church pastor and a college president that illustrate the destructiveness of each of these “giants” and gives scriptural antidotes to the poisonous effects each can have on a person’s life. Even though his denominational background shows through in his writing, any
Christian from any  background can find instruction and encouragement in his exhortations in this book. For instance, in his chapter on anger, he writes: “Nurtured anger is no way to live. The grudge is a kind of cancer that attacks the soul, bringing with it feelings of dark cynicism. This is why we say anger is toxic--it becomes a poison that will eventually kill the spirit. Hebrews 12:15 warns us to be careful gardeners: We’re not to let any root of bitterness spring up and cause trouble, defiling the garden of our relationships.” Later in the same chapter he quotes a man who had been wrongfully convicted of murder, “I’ve learned that bitterness only consumes the vessel that contains it. And for me to permit bitterness to control or to infect my life in any way whatsoever would be to allow those who imprisoned me to take even more than the 22 years they’ve already taken.”

In his final chapter, the author exhorts: “So love is the answer, but what if it has been reduced to ashes? How do we rekindle it? The answer is very simple: through prayer and Scripture. Only by experiencing the transforming presence of God can your heart be changed. His Spirit will give you His mind, His perspective, His loving servant attitude ….”

If you are struggling with any of these “giants” in your life, do yourself a favor and let David Jeremiah lead you into Scriptures that will help you slay them.
