Dr. Henry Cloud tells us in his introduction to The Secret Things of God, “Welcome,” “This book is not a Christian argument for or against The Secret. In fact, it sometimes agrees with and sometimes differs with it. Over and above being a discussion on the principles of The Secret, this book affirms the deep spiritual hunger that the success of Byrne’s book has shown all of us to have. And it offers tested spiritual truths based on the Bible that helps make life work.” (Dr. Cloud’s emphasis) Dr. Cloud begins his book by describing the beginnings of his own search, “How do you make it all work?” As he was wondering, he had an urge to open the Bible on the shelf in his college dorm. He said that at the time he was not religious and was not looking for God at that point. After reading the passage in Matthew 6:33-34 (opened at random), he decided to find out if God were really there and if he would help him without making him “weird.” He prayed and his successful search began. Dr. Cloud, a psychologist, goes on to describe how the Bible speaks to many situations in life: “The most successful, researched, and proven treatments for depression, anxiety, and addictions are all right out of the Bible.” He states his intention for
The Secret Things of God : “…I want to show some of the most
powerful secrets of God that affect the kinds of things that psychologists worry
about…and that you care about:
I love his chapter title, If You Seek God, He Will Show Up, a paraphrase of Jeremiah 29:13-14. There is a catch though; the seeker has to be sincere in wanting to know God as he truly is. This is the first “secret” Dr. Cloud reveals. Those who have sought and found God know how true this principle is. Dr. Cloud wrote, “As a Christian, the object of my faith…is not an impersonal universe but a personal God. And when that willingness to believe—that trust—is placed in the God who really can help us, our lives will change in ever-expanding ways.”
