The Discipline of Grace: A Study Guide book cover

Jerry Bridges, the author of The Discipline Of Grace, insists: “We must by faith in God’s Word lay hold on the fact that we have died to the reign of sin and are now alive to God, under His reign of grace. Unless we do this we will find ourselves seeking to pursue holiness by the strength of our own wills, not by the grace of God.”

In the first four chapters, he begins to explain with the use of Scripture the need for Christians to remind themselves daily about the justification and sanctification that is available through faith in Christ. Only then, can the pursuit of holiness result in true righteousness by faith.

But in Chapter Five “Disciplined By Grace,” he caught my full attention with a quote from Titus: “For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. It [the grace of God] teaches [disciplines] us to say ‘No’ to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age.” (Titus 2:11-12 NIV) How many times have I read that verse and never realized that God teaches or disciplines us by grace.

The remaining eight chapters are devoted to explaining how grace teaches us--or rather, how God teaches us by grace. Jerry Bridges has done an excellent job of explaining how dependence on God’s grace prevents our pursuit of holiness from becoming a self-righteous effort or guilt-ridden failure.

“Why can’t the Holy Spirit make any progress with a stone-hearted person?” asks Jerry Bridges in the study guide companion to his book The Discipline of Grace

Once you have read The Discipline of Grace you may find it helpful to use the companion study guide to impress the biblical principles on your mind.

Each chapter begins with a summary of the corresponding chapter of the book. Then there are eight to twelve questions for meditation and discussion. Included are scriptures relevant to the discussion.

The study guide can be used without the book, but the reader will benefit from reading the fuller explanations in the original The Discipline of Grace.
