30 Days to Taming your Tongue

What you say (and don’t say) will improve your relationships.

by Deborah Smith Pegues

Deborah Smith Pegues describes the negative ways we use our tongues with 30 adjectives, such as: The Lying Tongue, The Know-it-all Tongue, The Rude Tongue, and even, The Silent Tongue. The book 30 Days to Taming Your Tongue is divided into 30 chapters which can be read as daily devotionals. It doesn’t take that long to read, but changing the way a person speaks takes more than knowing what to say or to not say. It takes a change of heart and lots of practice. The author warns, "The only hope for the tongue is the Spirit of God. The tongue must be bridled and brought into subjection by Him on a daily basis. How do we begin the process?"

The author refers to refraining from negative speech as a "tongue fast."

Each daily reading begins with a scripture such as:

The LORD detests lying lips, but he delights in men who are truthful.
Proverbs 12:22

In the first day’s reading a scripture from the Bible is followed by a short essay describing a specific example of lying with appropriate scriptures sprinkled throughout the chapter. She ends the chapter with an affirmation of intentional proper speech. Each of the day’s readings, or chapters, on other topics, follows the same format.

She has included three appendixes. Appendix A is a daily evaluation checklist, Appendix B is a list of alternative uses of the tongue, and Appendix C is a list of scriptures about the use of the tongue. There is a companion workbook to help in building proper speech.

The range of poisonous speech came as a surprise to me. I had never tried to count up how many different negative uses of speech there are. I never thought of being silent as potentially poisonous. I can see I have a lot of work cut out for me!
