100 Bible Verses That Changed The World, book cover.

“For two millennia the Bible has been in the business of changing the lives of people who in turn have changed the world,” states the Preface of 100 Bible Verses That Changed The World.

The authors William J. Petersen and Randy Petersen have written two page essays on each of 99 people who were inspired by verses in the Bible to take action. What these people did made a major impact on this world. Elizabeth Fry used Luke 7:37 to change the lives of women and children in London’s Newgate prison.

The authors do warn, however, “Several of our world-changers used the point-and-shoot method of biblical guidance….” For example, Billy Sunday: “Largely because of the Sundays’ attitude regarding money, evangelists became a laughingstock.”

Religious men (St. Francis of Assissi), explorers (Christopher Columbus), soldiers (Robert E. Lee), homemakers (Elizabeth Fry), missionaries (Amy Carmichael), scientists, (George Washington Carver), musicians (George Fredic Handel), and many others of different walks of life are included.

These people didn’t have halos on their heads. They had strengths and weaknesses, sins and shortcomings-not so different from any of us. Yet they made a difference. May you find your world-changing verse.
