Set Apart For God By Scarlett Stough
To prepare for this study, please read
the Women in Christ commentary, Delilah
and Judges chapters 13-16.
Part I Delilah’s Example 1. Judges 13:1 What was the spiritual condition
of the Israelites at this point in their history? What was their political
condition?
2. Judges 13:2-7 What was the solution
that God proposed? Note especially verse 5.
3. Judges 13:4-5, 8, 12-14, 24-25; Numbers
6:1-21 What were the requirements of a Nazarite who was “set apart to God?”
How long was Samson’s “period of separation?”
4. Judges 14:8-9 Which of these prohibitions
did Samson fail to follow in this incident?
5. Judges 14:10 What prohibition is it
likely that Samson participated in at the wedding feast?
6. Judges 14:1-3; 15:1-3; 16:1-4; I John
2:15-16 Was Samson interested in serving God? What was he pursuing? Who
or what was Samson’s true love? Is there a “Delilah” in your life?
7. Judges 16:4-16; James 1:13-15 What relevance
do you see in the story of Samson and Delilah to your life?
8. Judges 16:19-20 Why do you think God
waited until this last prohibition was broken before he withdrew his strength
from Samson? What warning do you see in this to apply to your life
as a Christian?
9. Judges 16:21-31; I John 2:17; Hebrews
11:32-34; Matthew 21:28-32 What lesson do you think Samson learned? What
do you learn from his life that you can apply to your own life?
Part II Be Separate 1. II Corinthians 6:14-18; Revelation 18:4-8;
Isaiah 52:11; John 17:14-16 How can a Christian be “in the world” but “not
of the world?” How does a person “come out from them” in order to “be separate?”
2. Matthew 15:1-20 What did Jesus say makes
a person “unclean?” The requirements a Nazarite followed set him or her
apart visibly from the rest of society. Why do you think a person who conscientiously
follows the commandments of God stands out from the rest of society?
3. John 13:34-35; John 15:7-8; John 17:23
What else sets the disciples of Jesus apart from the world?
4. Ephesians 4:1-3, 17-32; 5:1-16 How does
Paul’s instructions in this letter to the Ephesian church compare to Jesus’
words in Matthew 15:18-20?
5. Revelation 22:10-16; Galatians 5:19-21
What clear difference do you see between those who are “set apart to God”
and those who “will not inherit the kingdom of God?” In your opinion is
living a “set apart” life an attempt to earn God’s free gift of salvation?
(Galatians 3:1-5) Explain your answer.
Part III Be Holy 1. Leviticus 10:8-11; 11:44-45; 21:6-8;
Romans 11:16; 12:1; Ephesians 1:4; Colossians 1:21-23; I Peter 1:15-16;
I Peter 2:4-5 What similarity do you see between the holiness of the Levitical
priesthood and the priesthood of those who are disciples of Christ? What
does holiness mean to you? Do you think this attribute is optional for
Christians? Why or why not?
2. I Peter 1:13-16, 22-23; II Corinthians
7:1; Titus 2:11-15; 3:1-8 How do we “purify ourselves?” What “contaminates
body and spirit?” What does “perfecting holiness” mean to you?
3. Revelation 22:11 How does habitual wrong
doing lead to vileness? How does habitual right doing lead to holiness?
4. Romans 1:18-32; II Timothy 3:1-5;4:3-4
What happens to society as a whole as the difference widens between those
who are committed to doing right through obedience and trust in God and
those who live as if there is no God? What does this world’s society look
like to you today? How much has it affected your thinking and behavior?
5. Deuteronomy 30:11-21; Jeremiah 31:33-34;
Galatians 5:13-26; I Peter 4:1-6 How do you feel about God’s statement
that his commandments are not too difficult to do? What provision has God
made so that you are able to trust and obey him? What has it cost you to
obey? How have you benefited from obedience and trust in God?
