Daughters of Zelophehad
By Scarlett Stough
To prepare for this study, please read
the Women in Christ commentary, The
Daughters of Zelophehad and Numbers Chapters 26 through 27 and Chapter
36:1-13.
Part I Example of the Daughters of Zelophehad 1. Numbers 26:1-4, 29-34; 51-56 Name two
reasons for the census.
2. Numbers 27:1-4 What request did Zelophehad's
daughters make? And why? How would it feel to stand before thousands of
people and challenge tradition? Was their request self-seeking? Why or
why not?
3. Numbers 27:5-6 How did Moses decide
their case?
4. Numbers 27:7; Galatians 3:26-4:7 Does
this decision, in your opinion, have a spiritual application? Explain your
answer?
5. Numbers 27:8-11 What impact did the
request of these five women have on Israel's legal system?
6. Numbers 36:1-4 What objection did the
clan leaders make to the decision made in favor of Zelophehad's daughters?
Was the clan leaders’ motivation different or similar to the motivation
of the five sisters? Explain.
7. Numbers 36:5-9 What amendment was made
to the original decree?
8. Numbers 36:10-12 Why do you think Zelophehad's
daughters were willing to comply with this restriction on their inheritance?
(For a similar restriction for Christians, see I Corinthians 7:39.)
9. II Peter 1:10-11; Matthew 6:33 Consider
and discuss any application of the example of Zelophehad's daughters who
sought an inheritance to your responsibility in seeking the kingdom of
God.
Part II Co-heirs With Christ 1. Romans 8:16-17 What relationship guarantees
inheriting glory? What qualifier(s) do you see in these two verses?
2. Romans 4:9, 13-16; Galatians 3:26-29
On what basis do God's children become heirs? Who is eligible to inherit?
3. Colossians 1:9-14 How does a person
become qualified to inherit? What, according to these verses, do saints
inherit? Who are the saints?
4. Titus 3:3-7 From what did Jesus save
humanity and for what did he save us?
5. Matthew 19:16-30; Luke 10:25-37 How
did Jesus answer the question: “What must I do to inherit eternal life?”
Do Paul's teachings in Romans and Galatians contradict or complement Jesus’
teachings? Explain.
6. Acts 26:18 (King James Version) [Note:
“place” in the NIV is a translation of a word that refers to a portion
of an inheritance.] Acts 20:32 How is the concept of inheritance significant
for those who preach and receive the gospel?
7. Matthew 25:31-46; I Corinthians 6:9-11;
15:50; Ephesians 5:1-16; Galatians 5:16-25; Hebrews 12:14-17 What makes
a person ineligible or unable to inherit? What does the resurrection have
to do with inheritance? How does this fit into Jesus’ answer to the question:
“What must I do to inherit eternal life?”
Part III Eternal Inheritance 1. Acts 7:2-6; Hebrews 11:8-19 Since Abraham
did not live to inherit the promised land, how is God going to keep his
promise?
2. Ephesians 1:11-14, 15-23; Hebrews 1:1-4,
14; 9:15; Hebrews 6:13-20 How do you know you will receive your inheritance?
3. Hebrews 6:9-12; Colossians 3:23-24;
Revelation 21:7-8; I Peter 3:8-22; 4:1; Romans 8:17 Is receiving your eternal
inheritance easy? Explain.
4. I Peter 1:3-12; Revelation 21:1-7; Matthew
5:1-12 Describe the promise God has made to those who are his children.
Considering the value of this inheritance, what changes, if any, do you
need to make to “live worthy” of your calling as a son or daughter of God?
(Ephesians 4:1) In what ways, do you need to step forward and claim the
inheritance waiting for you?
