Build on this Foundation By Scarlett Stough
To prepare for this study, please read
the Women in Christ commentary: Sheerah
Who Built.
Part I Sheerah’s Example 1. I Chronicles 7:20-29 What do you learn
about Sheerah’s family from this Bible passage?
(Optional: Joshua 10:10-11; 16:1-10; 18:13-14; 21:22; I Samuel 13:18; I Kings 9:17; I Chronicles 6:68; 7:24; II Chronicles 8:5; 25:13 What do you learn about the history of Upper and Lower Beth Horon from these Scriptures?) 2. I Chronicles 7:24 Why do you think Sheerah
(the only named woman in this list) is included among Ephraim’s descendants?
3. What do you think God wants us to learn
from her example? Are you surprised by her inclusion? Why? Are you encouraged
by it? Why?
Part II A Spiritual House 1. I Peter 2:4-9 God uses construction
as a metaphor to illustrate the purpose for and changes made in people
who believe in and accept Jesus as the way to faith and hope in God. In
what ways do you see God building you into “a spiritual house?”
2. Ephesians 2:17-22 What is the foundation
of the building God is constructing? What is the purpose for this dwelling?
3. Matthew 7:24-29; Luke 6:46-49 What does
Jesus teach us about building a spiritual house that will stand up through
the difficulties of life?
4. I Corinthians 3:9-17 “Each one should
be careful how he builds.” (v.10 NIV) Are you building your spiritual house
on a solid foundation? What tools and materials are you using that will
produce an eternal house? How has your spiritual house been tested? What
enabled you to remain standing?
5. I Corinthians 8:1-3; I Corinthians 13:4-13
What is the most durable material to use in building our spiritual house?
How do the qualities of love build our relationship with others and God?
Why is knowledge without love just so much hot air?
6. Psalm 127:1; II Corinthians 5:1-10;
Hebrews 3:1-6; Hebrews 11:10; Philippians 2:12-13 Since our “eternal house”
is in heaven and God is the builder, what are we building in this life
while we are still living in our temporary “tents”---our mortal bodies?
7. Ephesians 4:11-16 Who are the members
of God’s construction crew? In what ways are you alone responsible for
the quality of your spiritual house? In what ways does God expect you to
receive his help in constructing a lasting dwelling? How do others help
in building your house? Are you accepting the help that is available to
you?
8. I Corinthians 14:12; I Thessalonians
5:11; Romans 14:19; 15:1-7In what ways does God want you to help others
build their spiritual houses?
9. Jude 1:20-25 Summarize the exhortations
in this passage. How will you use this encouragement to continue to build
on God’s foundation? How can you know your house will still be standing
when you face your king, Jesus, at his return? (Philippians 1:4-6)
