The Woman Set Free
By Scarlett Stough
To prepare for this study, please read
the Women in Christ commentary, The
Woman Set Free and Luke 13:10-17.
Part I. The Woman's Example 1. Luke 13:10-11 Note when and where this
incident took place. What was the woman's infirmity and, according to Scripture,
what caused it? How long had she had this condition?
2. Imagine the effort it would take to walk from home a few blocks to a neighborhood church if you were disabled. Then consider having to do that every week for eighteen years. How would you feel and how would that affect your mental and emotional well being? In what ways would that infirmity limit your choices? Do you have some physical or spiritual
weakness or addiction that limits your choices? How has this affected your
mental, emotional, and spiritual well being?
3. Luke 13:12-13 How did the woman respond
to being healed by Jesus? What do you learn about who God is by the ministry
of Jesus?
4. Luke 13:14 Compare or contrast the reaction
of the religious leader. What would motivate a person to react this way?
5. Luke 13:15-16 Why do you think this
passage emphasizes the lordship of Jesus? Have you had any experiences
in which denominational rules prevented compassionate response to hurting
people? Was there, or is there, anything you can do to change hurtful policy?
6. Luke 13:17 How did the average person
respond to the ministry of Jesus?
7. Luke 9:1-2, 6, 10-11, 13 What were the
elements that made up the ministry of Jesus? In what ways do you want Jesus
to minister to you? From what do you need to be freed or released?
Part II Resist the Devil 1. Acts 10:38; Revelation 12:9-12, 17;
I John 3:8; John 8:44; I Peter 5:8; Genesis 4:7; I John 3:11-15; Ephesians
2. Mark 4:15; Colossians 2:8; Acts 5:3;
8:18-23; II Timothy 2:25-26; II Corinthians 11:13-15 What are some of the
ways people can be taken captive by the devil?
3. I Peter 5:8-9; James 4:7-10; Ephesians
6:10-12 How can an individual avoid being taken captive by Satan?
4. Hebrews 2:14-18; Colossians 1:13-14,
18; I John 3:8 In what ways has Jesus released you from Satan's power?
Part III The Authority of Christ 1. Matthew 4:10-11; Mark 9:25-27; Luke
4:31-36; 9:42; Jude 9 In these examples, Jesus commanded the devil and
other evil spirits and they obeyed. Do you believe the living Christ still
exercises that power and authority? Why or why not? What applications do
you see considering Question 2 in Part II?
2. John 8:31-36; Matthew 7:21-29; I Peter
3:22 How do truth, obedience, and the Son work together to set people free?
How has practicing the teachings of Jesus given you release from Satan's
power to bind you?
3. Genesis 3:15; Romans 16:20; Revelation
20:1-3, 7-10 The final crushing of Satan's power is yet future. What is
the ultimate fate of Satan?
4. Psalm 2 What are the two sides to the
authority of the Anointed One? (Both Christ and Messiah mean Anointed One.)
What reasons do you see to praise or glorify God in these two aspects of
God as seen in Jesus?
